Traveling Gently: A Slow Story From Curaçao

I notice it almost every time I travel. The excitement of arriving somewhere new, the change in climate, the unfamiliar food, the shift in time. While my mind is curious and open, my body is quietly working hard to adapt.

Often, it speaks to me through digestion. A heaviness. Slowness. Constipation. What I once saw as an inconvenience, I now recognize as a message: slow down, take care, listen.

When I move too fast—jumping from place to place, filling my days, absorbing new impressions—my nervous system stays alert. In that state, digestion naturally pauses. The body waits.

I’ve learned not to push through this anymore. Instead, I soften my schedule. I rest more. I choose slow walks, gentle stretches, quiet mornings. I allow my body to catch up with my surroundings. Every time I do, something settles.

Travel becomes less about doing, and more about being.

Curaçao makes slowing down feel easy.

There’s something about the island—the warmth, the open skies, the steady rhythm of the days—that gently invites presence. I feel it when I wake up, when I step outside, when I notice how little is actually needed.

I spend time moving slowly. Yoga. A hike through the landscape. Sitting quietly, letting my breath deepen. And always, the ocean is there. A place to float, to soften the body, to let the nervous system unwind while the sun warms the skin.

Here, my body remembers its natural rhythm.

One of my favorite places on the island is Hofi Cas Cora.

I love arriving there unhurried, walking past the animals, noticing the crops growing in the soil. There’s a calmness in the air. A sense that time stretches a little wider.

I choose food that feels supportive—fresh, simple, nourishing. Sometimes I sit down for a meal prepared with care. Other times, I pick fresh vegetables and take them with me, becoming my own chef for the day. Cooking slowly, eating consciously, listening to what my body actually wants.

What keeps drawing me back is not only the food, but the feeling. The community they’ve built. The connection between land, people, and nourishment. It feels honest and grounding.

When I honor my body with rest, gentle movement, sunlight, water, and nourishing food, travel transforms. It becomes restorative rather than draining. Informative rather than overwhelming.

This is the essence of slow travel—and the heart of what I share through Curisland. Creating space to pause. To reconnect. To realign.

Whether it’s a mindful day, time in nature, or a one-day retreat designed to support your body and nervous system, small intentional moments can create deep shifts.

If you find yourself on Curaçao, move gently. Visit the farm. Eat slowly. Listen closely.

And if you do, I’d love to hear what unfolds for you.

Pause. Connect. Align.
